The Historic Jordan Hare Stadium

Opelika is a city in east central Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Lee County. Opelika has a population of 27,722 as of the 2010 census. Opelika is home to Auburn University at Montgomery and formerly Troy University at Montgomery until that campus moved to Phenix City, Alabama in 2005. Opelika is also the home of the annual Celebrity Softball Jam which raises money for the East Alabama Medical Center.

Opelika was founded in 1836 by Daniel S. Warner and Aaron Levy. It was incorporated as a town in 1848 and as a city in 1872. The city’s name Opelika is derived from the Creek word Opelika, which means “large swamp”. Opelika was a stop on the Montgomery and West Point Railroad.

Jordan Hare Stadium, home to the Auburn Tigers football team, is one of the most impressive sports venues in the country. The stadium, which has a seating capacity of 87,451, is often sold out for Auburn home games.

The Jordan Hare Stadium complex includes a six-story press box, state-of-the-art video board, coaches’ offices, and a training center. In addition, the complex features a large outdoor plaza that can accommodate pre-game and post-game activities.

The Jordan Hare Stadium playing surface is natural grass and was replaced prior to the start of the 2008 season. The new surface was funded in part by a contribution from Auburn alumnus and NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott.

– The “Kick Six” in 2013, when Auburn’s Chris Davis returned a missed field goal 109 yards for a touchdown to upset Alabama in the Iron Bowl

– Cam Newton’s Heisman Trophy-winning season in 2010
