Opelika is a city in east central Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Lee County. Opelika has a population of 27,722 as of the 2010 census. Opelika is home to Auburn University at Montgomery and formerly Troy University at Montgomery until that campus moved to Phenix City, Alabama in 2005. Opelika is also the home of the annual Celebrity Softball Jam which raises money for the East Alabama Medical Center.
Opelika was founded in 1836 by Daniel S. Warner and Aaron Levy. It was incorporated as a town in 1848 and as a city in 1872. The city’s name Opelika is derived from the Creek word Opelika, which means “large swamp”. Opelika was a stop on the Montgomery and West Point Railroad.
